Lighthouse Christian Homeschool Association was founded in the spring of 1996 when three friends, Beth Herbert, Susan Sykes, and Holly Justice, decided to form a new homeschool support group for families in the Wake Forest area. They wanted it to be a Christian group because Jesus was the foundation of their faith, and therefore of their homeschools and their families, and they wanted to ensure that prayer and a Christian worldview would never be censored from their gatherings by those not sharing the same convictions. They also decided not to place a limit on the group size, trusting the Lord to provide for facility, budget, and administrative needs if the group grew.
The first meeting, held at North Wake Baptist Church, was attended by 17 people. That small group, whose children were all age 13 or younger, planned some field trips and other activities, including bi-weekly PEP Days ( Physical Education and Play ), a monthly Oral Presentation Day, a 4-H club, a time for the group to administer the state-required standardized testing, and a weekly enrichment Co-op, which involved moms teaching fun classes like Spanish, art, science, and auto maintenance. A parent meeting was held one evening each month for encouragement and fellowship, and a phone chain and a monthly newsletter were the means of sharing information with one another.
As homeschooling continued to gain acceptance and popularity over the following years, the support group grew and grew, until membership was well over 200 families, with children ranging from babies to high schoolers. Our monthly parent meetings and activities moved from North Wake Church to Faith Baptist Church and then to Homelight Books. Communication went electronic, switching from phone chain to email and the website.
Activities such as Lighthouse Sports were started by groups of parents who had the vision to provide opportunities for their children to develop particular talents and interests. Some of the other activities our support group has enjoyed over the years are Year End Awards Night, High School Graduation, Kindergarten Celebration, Book It!, International Fair, Geography Bee, Thanksgiving Feast, Christmas Craft Day, Moms' Christmas Tea, Chess Club, Lego Club, Keepers at Home club, Nursing Home Visits, Food Pantry ministry, rollerskating, bowling, Used Book & Curriculum Sale, Yearbook, and teen socials.
The group incorporated in 2006 and is registered as a non-profit corporation with the state of NC. As Lighthouse continues to grow and change, we trust in God for direction and guidance in providing for the needs of our local Christian homeschooling community.
Lighthouse Statement of Faith
|
- We believe that there is one God eternally existing in three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
- We believe that the Bible is God's written revelation to man and that it is verbally inspired, authoritative, and without error in the original manuscripts.
- We believe in the deity of Jesus Christ, His virgin birth, sinless life, miracles, death on the cross to provide for our redemption, bodily resurrection and ascension into heaven, present ministry of intercession for us, and His return to earth in power and glory.
- We believe in the personality and the deity of the Holy Spirit that He performs the miracle of new birth in an unbeliever and indwells believers, enabling them to live a Godly life.
- We believe that creation, as described in Genesis, was an act of God, and not the result of evolution.
- We believe that man was created in the image of God, but because of sin, was alienated from God. That alienation can be removed only by accepting through faith alone God's gift of salvation, which was made possible by Christ's death.
